Nokia to make low-cost Windows Phone 7 devices soon, entices developers

While Microsoft’s , less hardware demanding, Windows Phone 7-based operating system for low-cost devices in emerging markets are not exactly new, the latest news from the stables points towards this vision becoming a reality sooner than later, in the hands of one of the world’s premier feature phone manufacturers – Nokia.

The largest demand for cellphones worldwide is obviously in the budget segment, and while Nokia knows that truism deep down inside, even Apple is showing interest in making a low-cost iPhone. Android, compared to all other smartphone operating systems, has already started tapping this market, with manufacturers like Huawei and brands like Micromax offering sub-10k smartphones like the   and . This is also because of the laxer hardware minimum requirements of the platform.

Going back on his words of introducing the first Nokia Windows Phone 7 devices by late 2011, Elop has now  that they will be able to make low-cost WP7 phones “very quickly.” Of course, this could mean anything, and the first devices could very well only arrive by the previous estimates.

The Lenovo LePad to launch 'worldwide' in June, gets $500 expected price

The innovative laptop-tablet hybrid, the  IdeaPad, which detaches to become the standalone Android tablet, the , is going to be launched in China shortly (by March), and will become available “worldwide” by June. No exact prices are available yet, and for now, only the expected tablet-only pricing in China is known, anywhere from $399 to $449. The LePad is not expected to cost more than $500 in other parts of the world.

The currently Android Froyo (v2.2) tablet is expected to launch with (v3.0), and offers users a 10.1-inch screen, a 1.3GHz Snapdragon processor for the tablet, a 1.2GHz Intel Core i5-540UM processor for the U1 IdeaPad base, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage space.

You are probably wondering what worldwide means, and if the term encompasses India…Well, things are still a bit unsure, but Lenovo India’s MD, Amar Babu, has been  to confirm it will arrive at some point this year, after critical volume sales have been achieved in China!

So, while the form factor is certainly different from the , the pricing and the India launch story seems to mirror it exactly!

Ihad been planning to buy a new laptop for a while, since my older one was giving problems.  (By the way, on 24-Apr the new version of  8.04 LTS, codenamed Hardy Heron, was released.  I downloaded that and installed it on my old machine, and was very happy with it.)  The new computer cost about Rs 45,000 (which is far less than the amount I paid for my old computer two and a half years ago!).  It has an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.67 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM (which I am planning to upgrade later), and a 160 GB HDD.  I love the build quality of this computer, it feels sturdy and the design is very nice.  In fact, I took feedback from my friend Maheshwaran (who runs  on this — and he told me that his HP laptop was "used as a pillow while travelling" and had "fallen off a study table", and was still working fine.  Personally I think the 14.1 inch widescreen is the perfect size for a laptop, and that's what I went for.  I love the bright screen on this computer.  Besides all that, the computer has a very aesthetic design (seen in the picture above, which is swiped from the HP website).  In general, no complaints about the computer so far.

You could be forgiven for wondering why this should be news, but the fact is Sony Ericsson has been keeping their official cards close to their chest with their new hybrid smartphone.

However the manufacturer has now come clean and made the Xperia PlayStation official. That said the company is not completely spilling the beans as you will still have to wait for the official announcement on the 13^th February when the Mobile World Congress takes place.

You might also be wondering what the fuss is about as much of the information about the Xperia PlayStation was leaked at successive intervals for the past 6 months or so.  But for those who have had a sleep since then and forgotten what its specifications are then a quick rundown might be useful.

Features include Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8255 processor and a 4 inch 854 x 480 pixel touchscreen and an Adreno 205 GPU. There is also 512MB of RAM/ROM, a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, dual-microphones (for noise reduction) and a microSD card slot.

The Xperia PlayStation is a hybrid smartphone combining mobile phone technology with Sony Ericsson’s well known PlayStation games technology.

The Xperia PlayStation is an Android device capable of running the Android 2.3 operating system.
